Hidden Desires

I have always been fascinated by the personal nature of journals and love letters. How easy it is to say in writing the words that can’t be spoken. I hope to convey this feeling in the personal nature of my collages. They are a visual diary and interpretation of the poetic narrative in my head. My goal is to build narratives that can be both playful and uncomfortable, inviting the viewer to stare a beat longer at works that spark a feeling and convey a slightly too intimate story.

My selected work here has been put together as a series exploring erotic feelings locked away from the world. Birthed from an experience of yearning in and outside of relationships, they tell the story of a secret lust unable to be fulfilled. The series of collages in Hidden Desires show a maddening feeling and are the result of a maddening process. They have been inspired by short love letters and phrases I have written to different people and conversations from specific moments in my past. How do we explore feelings we may have when they’re forbidden by societal norms and the laws of monogamy?

My medium of collage is inspired by New York and other cities I visit. The street art and walls tell a story of the transient art that is constantly changing with every tag, poster, and attempt to cover it all with a fresh coat of paint, only to be peeled away to reveal what’s beneath. This process feels similar to the layers each of us carry, the moments and changes that are layered to create who we are.
